Samuel Hears God's Voice

1 Samuel 3:1–21

Young Samuel lived at the house of the Lord and helped Eli, the old priest. One night, while Samuel was lying down, he heard someone call his name. He ran to Eli and said, 'Here I am.' But Eli said, 'I did not call you. Go back and lie down.' This happened three times.

Then Eli understood that it was the Lord calling Samuel. He told him to answer, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.' When the Lord called again, Samuel answered just like that, and God gave him a message. In the morning Samuel told Eli everything, even though it was hard. As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him, and all Israel knew he was God's prophet.

Children learn: We can be ready to listen to God, and wise grown-ups can help us understand.

Questions to talk about together

After reading, ask your child these questions. There is no wrong answer — the point is to talk together.

  1. 1What did Samuel say when he heard his name?
  2. 2How do you think Samuel felt when he woke up again and again?
  3. 3How can we listen to God together, like reading the Bible and praying?

The book has questions and a parent guide for every story.
